Communication and Neurodiversity Lab
Our mission is to develop and strengthen the evidence base for neurodiversity-affirming communication services and supports.

The Communication and Neurodiversity Lab is dedicated to researching communication strategies that support and empower neurodivergent individuals. Our work aims to illuminate how diverse communication methods can enhance understanding and connection across communities. We investigate how neurotype, gender, and social context shape interaction between autistic and non-autistic partners, exploring factors such as structural language development, neurotype matching, and the processes that foster rapport and mutual understanding.
Current projects examine gender-related differences in autistic communication and highlight the importance of neurodiversity-affirming practices. Through this research, the lab strives to move beyond deficit-based models of autism, promoting inclusive diagnostic frameworks, intervention approaches, and greater recognition of the unique strengths of autistic communicators.
Student researchers in the lab engage in meaningful projects that contribute to this mission, gaining experience in data collection, analysis, and dissemination. Our publications share findings that advance understanding of neurodiversity and communication, helping shape more inclusive perspectives in both research and clinical practice.
